I met Cecile first when I was coordinating the events for my group CRAFT: a creative community in east Nashville. I then would see your stuff on flickr. I truly enjoy her fiber jewelry, but only because I am not small enough to wear her funky, fabulous clothing. Check her out!

First Tell me a little bit about your - a little bio.
My name is Cecile, I am 34 and I started my business, Recycled by Hyena, in 2005. I am French and I have been living in Nashville, Tennessee, since 2003.

1. when did you start creating?
I always have been creating. I am an artist and my medium is photography. I have a master in Visual Arts and since I am a kid, I always have totally been into arts.

When I arrived in USA 6 years ago I was really broke and I had troubles finding clothes my size so I bought a sewing machine and started playing with fabric.

2. why did you choose to use recycled materials in your creations?
When I started sewing, another problem for me was the price of fabric. I started to use second hand clothing from thrift stores, Goodwill stores and so on. At that time, the “craft revolution” was starting to take off. I was interested by a lot of aspects of it. I grew more and more concerned about the environment and the crazy capitalism and consumerism these last years. Recycling second hand clothes from non profit stores was such a perfectly ethical way for me to work.

3. what is your favorite thing to create?
I enjoy everything I create. If I don’t like making something, I don’t make it. I really think the joy and pleasure you get designing and creating a piece is translated into it somehow and people can feel it. Really thinking about it, I have trouble putting one type of creation in front of another one. I love making fiber jewelry as much as I love creating clothing!
